On December 10, 2000, while Aria Lams was singing in a Christmas musical at the First Baptist Church in Tarrytown, NY, hundreds of people who never met her were singing their hearts out 30 miles away at a Manhattan recording studio to help save her life.
Aria, a 7-year-old Sleepy Hollow resident diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 3 1/2, had inspired a full house of Broadway stars (roughly 100 performers and a 50-piece orchestra of Broadway musicians), to stay up half the night mixing and mastering a song to help someone they didn't know.
The song titled ''For Aria: Love at Christmas Time from Broadway,'' was created to help raise money for Aria's cancer treatment. The money went to the Aria Lams Fund at Samaritan's Purse, an organization that helps seriously ill children and their families.
Over the last 20 plus years, the song has largely been forgotten. Until tonight! Hamilton star, Ari Afsar joins us from NY to perform Love at Christmas Time, in honor of our show creator's niece, Aria Lams, who lost her battle with leukemia in 2004.
She would have turned 30 years old last month.
Hope for the Holidays was created and produced by award-winning writer and director, David Fischette. The idea for this project was born out of his own struggles during the holidays. "Christmas was always my favorite time of year" Fischette says, "something I looked forward to for months on end...but in recent years, the loss of family relationships, is only amplified during the holidays." We may not know each other's struggles, but for one night we can be family.
